Juice fasting has been gaining a lot of popularity lately.  However, it is still kind of a scary thought…not eating for days, isn’t what people(well, at least in our country) are used to.  Since this website was inspired by my sister, Diana’s journey into juice fasting, I thought I’d ask her why she decided to juice fast, and what her experience was like.  Keep in mind, this is not a how to guide, and please consult a physician before you start any kind of diet.

A couple of years ago my brother introduced to me the concept of juice fasting. As a food fanatic, I didn’t really see the appeal of only drinking liquids for more than one day so I went on with my “normal” lifestyle full of greasy, fried, over-processed food. Meanwhile my brother has adopted juice fasting into his healthy eating habits and over time his body became slimmer and more toned.  Fast-forward to Summer 2011 when my Netflix addiction has spiraled out of control and I stumble upon the documentary, “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead”.  The film follows a man who has a rare disease and tries to prove that the nutrients he puts into his body can actually treat his symptoms and move past this terrible disease that has interrupted his life.  Enter: Juice Fasting. This man drives through America to learn more about what people eat and how they take care of their health. While on his journey, he meets an overweight, depressed trucker who also has the same rare disease as himself. The trucker becomes inspired with the results of juice fasting and decides to try the juice fasting challenge. Within a few months, both lives are transformed—both are healthy, medication-free, and most importantly, happy.

After watching this documentary, I was inspired too and bought a Breville 800Jexl juicer (per my brother Jeff’s recommendation).  For the next 10 days, I only drank juice.  (SAY WHAT?!) This is not just your ordinary V8 juice from the store. I would juice everything and anything. The more color in the vegetable or fruit, the better. From kale, spinach, collard greens, cabbage, green peppers, beets, carrots, lemons, apples, oranges—basically any vegetable or fruit you can think of—JUICE IT. If you tried to eat the amount of vegetables that I added into my daily diet, your jaw would hate you. Through juicing, I was able to incorporate all of these vitamins and antioxidants into my body without a suffering jaw!

At first, it was a difficult to push through the initial cravings of fast food, rice, pasta, ANYTHING! I just had this incredible desire to eat everything. But what I learned is that many times when you think you are starving, you are actually just thirsty. Whenever I would get hungry, I would pour myself a glass of juice and I would be full. I know, I know. You’re probably thinking this is all nonsense right about now but you have to try it to believe it. Within a couple of days, your clothes will fit better, you won’t feel so bloated, and your self-esteem will rise.

However, I would like to point out that I don’t believe juice fasting is like the Master Cleanse fast. The Master Cleanse fast has nothing healthy to it. Where are the nutrients? In the maple syrup and cayenne pepper? UM NO. You should not start a juice fast just to lose a couple of pounds to fit into a dress and then go back to your old eating habits that you had before. The juice fast is a way for your body to detox all of the terrible junk food and processed foods you have consumed WITHOUT having to deprive your body of nutrients that the Master Cleanse fast does. Your body would most likely go into shock if no nutrients were entering your body for that long of a time. The juice fast allows you to rebalance your body so that after the fast, you can begin a healthy diet which is the stepping stone to wellness (whether your goal is weight loss or maintaining your weight).

Yes, there will be times when you will want to just forfeit the juice fast and drive as fast as you can to McDonald’s but this is your health that is at stake. It won’t be easy but if you are fed up with the way you feel in your body and really want to change your eating habits long-term, then you should try to do a juicing fast (Watch “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” for more inspiration and details!) Try for just 5 days and you will feel your body instantly transform. With the self-confidence you gain, you have just the right mentality to start your healthy and active lifestyle. There’s no going back, press forward and your body and your future will thank you for it!
